Former Minister of State Security and anti-apartheid activist, Ronnie Kasrils has called for unity within trade union federation, the Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu).
Kasrils was speaking at the 70th anniversary of the South African Congress of Trade Unions (Sactu) in Rivonia, Johannesburg today.
In 2014, Numsa was expelled from Cosatu while in 2015, former Cosatu Secretary-General Zwelinzima Vavi was also expelled.
This gave birth to the formation of the South African Federation of Trade Union (Saftu) in 2017.
Kasrils says leaders of trade unions within Cosatu must come together to solve problems that they are faced with.
“So, comrades, we know that what’s staring us in the face, where the problems are and the challenges, that first of all, we need trade union unity. So, how do we bring that about? And then you’ve come up against egos of people and how to break through and bring them together,” says Kasrils.
