The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution calling for a swift end to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
European countries sought to introduce amendments over concerns that the text neither mentioned Russia’s aggression nor proposed a resolution to the conflict in line with the UN Charter.
However, the amendments either didn’t receive enough votes for passage or Russia vetoed them.
Russia and China voted with the United States on passing its one-line resolution while five European countries including France, Denmark, Slovenia, Greece and the United Kingdom (UK) abstained.
France and the UK have not used their vetoes since 1989.
It’s unclear how the United States-initiated legally binding resolution will move the peace process forward as it contains very little substance and makes no demands on the parties but highlights a widening approach to ending the war between traditional allies, the US and Europe.
The General Assembly earlier passed two competing texts – one from Ukraine and an amended text from the US that called for a resolution to the conflict in line with the UN Charter and international law.
